Comment Below on Your National Pie Day Activities for a Chance to Win a Copy of “Pie Contest in a Box”
Thanks to Pacific Pie Company for hosting a great National Pie Day Pie Contest yesterday and for inviting me to be a judge!
The contest was a lot of fun and there were some great submissions! Here are a few photos from the event:
Look for the 1st Place winners on Pacific Pie Co’s menu in February! The winners were:
1st Place Sweet: Judith for Cherry Pie
1st Place Savory: Eric for Pork + Sweet Potato Pie
People’s Choice Award: Autumn for Meyer Lemon Hibiscus Pie -
2nd Choice Sweet: Richard for Pecan Pie
2nd Choice Savory: Veronica for Butternut Bliss
This was my second experience judging pies. It’s always fun, because it gives me a chance to see how my pie-tasting stacks up with other experts, so I was pleased to see that my favorites were mostly in-line with the results.
Pacific Pie Co.’s owner, Sarah Curtis-Fawley, used the “Pie Contest in a Box” kit to run the contest, and I have to say, I was very impressed by the organization of the contest. The scorecards really helped me focus my thoughts on what I was judging and I think it helped the organizers tally the results easily.
With that said, I’ve been sitting on a copy I received of “Pie Contest in a Box” for far too long – so in the spirit of National Pie Day, I’m giving away my copy!
Pie Contest in a Box, written by Gina Hyams, includes a book that “orients judges to the history of pie, discusses why pie matters, outlines different categories of pie and official judging criteria, and includes prize-winning recipes.” Plus, it includes everything you need to run a pie contest, including Pie Contest Judge Badges, Numbered Pie Toppers, Scorecards and Prize Ribbons!
So, here’s the deal, to enter yourself for a chance to win Pie Contest in a Box – tell us what you’re planning, or what you did, for National Pie Day by commenting below! Make sure to use an email address I can reach you at to get your shipping address if you win! I’ll leave it open until Jan. 27 – good luck!

/ January 23, 2012I baked 12 pies- 6 French Silk and 6 Vegan Apple pies! I sent out a post to get peoples favorite pie flavors so I could bring the most popular one out the Farmers Market in Downtown Phoenix where I sell pie. So far Chocolate and Cherry are tied and I think I will create a combination of both in honor of National Pie Day!!!

/ January 23, 2012I started the day by writing a blog post about the history of pie in America on my blog Pie in the Sky. I made a lattice top blueberry pie this afternoon and photographed the technique so that I can do a blog post on that too.
My daughter made sausage hand pies for supper as well as potato and onion tartlettes. Tweets and Facebook statuses reminding people to make and eat pie today rounded out my efforts to mark the day.
I’ve been a pie judge (and contest winner) many times so would love to win that book!
Congratulations contest winners!
The world needs more good pie so keep it up!

/ January 24, 2012Hello! I’m celebrating National Pie Day all week! First, I made two butternut squash pies that I entered in the Pacific Pie Co. contest. Yesterday, I made Cuban Picadillo Empanadas. Tomorrow I’m going to make grapefruit marmalade tarts. Friday’s my birthday so there will surely be birthday pie. Yay pie!

/ January 24, 2012I sent out an e-mail last week to the 60 people at my agency, told them that Monday was National Pie Day, and invited everyone to bring any kind of sweet or savory pie, tart, galette, quiche, mini-pie, whoopie pie, hand pie, etc. so we could have a lunchtime “Pie Pourri.” About a dozen people contributed, and we got a nice mix, although too many people brought store-bought pies—yuck! Next year—only home-made!

/ January 24, 2012That sounds awesome! The only good thing about bringing store-bought pies, though, is hopefully people see the direct comparison of how awful it is compared to good, homemade pie!

/ January 25, 2012Hey Veronica – the Butternut Bliss was awesome! I think it was my top choice for savory, which is saying a lot, because I am more of a meat and potatoes kind of guy with savory pies, but I was super-impressed with it – nice job!

/ January 25, 2012I also entered a pie in Sunday’s pie contest at Pacific Pie Company. I had never been to PPC before. I found it to be quite charming. My friends and I had a lovely lunch. While my apple blueberry pie didn’t win, I thought the contest was very well run. Much fun was had by all! Thanks for judging. I hope more pie contests are sponsored around the city this year.

/ January 25, 2012I am a CPA by day to support my pie making habits at night and thought that participating in the Pacific Pie Co pie-off on Sunday would be a great way to test out the competitive home-baking environment. While my pie did not place, and the Niners missed the Super Bowl, I did learn that leftover pie eaten straight out of the pie pan with a fork solves just about any problem. On National Pie Day proper, I worked 11 hours, my team lost their rec league basketball game – clearly the solution was more leftover pie. Problems solved. Tonight, the Blazers are looking sluggish playing on the road against the Warriors, but win or lose, I’ve got the rest of the pie to polish off. The moral of this saga: everyone wins when pie is involved.

/ January 27, 2012My cute boyfriend scootered over to Pacific Pie Co. to pick up pies for our dinner and our dessert on International Pie Day. We shared the savory, deeply-flavored Beef and Mushroom pie, along with an order of spicy Sausage Rolls. For dessert, a slice of Bourbon Hazelnut and a slice of Coconut Cream. Perfectly fabulous.
