Portland Pie-Off Returns (and Apparently Never Went Away, Sort Of)

A new iteration of the Portland Pie-Off is back this year on July 31st at Laurelhurst Park.

The community pie contest was originally founded and organized by a group of friends who declared themselves the “Portland Pie Commission” & it was held at Peninsula Park. Last summer, however, I reported that the event had been canceled, as it had grown to be a much larger event than original expectations and it had become a bit overwhelming for the commission to juggle with their day jobs.

However, apparently the Pie-Off never went away (at least in name), as another group seems to have taken the reigns and kept the event going last year & they continue this year.

Here are the deets for this year:

Portland Pie-Off 2011
Laurelhurst Park, SE 39th and Stark in Portland
Starts @ 2 p.m.
Categories: Best Sweet Pie, Best Savory Pie, Best Use of Creativity in Pie Baking, and People’s Choice
Prizes from local pie purveyors Random Order & Whiffies
Music from “Pie Talk” a band based on pie and the girl talk board game.
For more details, visit Portland Pie-Off’s Facebook page.

Update: As suspected, the “Portland Pie Commission” has confirmed that they are not associated with the new version. They write on their blog:

Oh for the love of pie, but the pie commission is on a pie hiatus and while we loved orchestrating the Pie Off for two years in a row, alas, not in 2011. We are very happy to see the love of all things pie continue with spin offs and replicas though, but please know any pie offs in 2011 are not done by us. Pie for the world!

Update 2: A short NYTimes Travel blog post recapping the event finally seems to get the story straight. Apparently the group running the pie off now had been running an event with their group of friends for the last 4 years and the last two years they started to make it more of a public event, since the other event folded (which explains why they had been calling it the 5th annual pie off, even though the other pie off had only run for three years).
