Portland’s Summer of Pie Love

Portland Pie-Off Cancelled
Portland’s summer of pie love took a hit when the Portland Pie Commission announced the third annual Portland Pie-Off had been cancelled.

However, the commissioners made a great point, Portland’s pie-scene has grown dramatically in the last year and there’s TONS of opportunities to enjoy pie this summer:

This summer, we hope you visit some of Portland’s wonderful celebrations of pie, or a farmer’s market or field and gather fruit for your own pie baking. Craft yourself a pie full of summer, gather your friends, and have a moment in one of Portland’s parks, in the sunshine. Smile with the ones you love, and share a piece of pie. There’s plenty to go around.

In fact, there’s a lot of pie-opportunities in Portland coming up soon!

PieLab Debuts at 30HourDay
PieLab, an experimental pie-cart/sociological experiment, will debut July 2-3 at 30 hour day, held at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

PieLab Finds Location; Wieden + Kennedy Loves Pie
More proof that Portland loves pie. Wieden + Kennedy, the iconic Portland-based advertising firm has agreed to let PieLab make its permanent home outside of W+K’s Portland headquarters.

PieLab’s Crystal Beasley writes:

As it turns out, Dan (Wieden) is a HUGE fan of pie, so much so that he shuts down the agency once a year for a pie-baking contest. Guess who’s the judge.

W+K has a space dedicated to start ups named Portland Incubator Experiment (PIE) that Renny heads up. He claims he named it PIE because he knew Dan would sign off on it if that was the name. I also found out that Dan has always wanted them to serve actual pie, so when I came along… magic!

Immortal Pie & Larder @ Summer Concert Series at Mt. Tabor Park
Immortal Pie & Larder, a fairly new addition to the Portland pie scene (that I need to try) specializes in take-home savory pies.

However, this summer they’ll be serving up their tasty creations at a free concert series at Mt. Tabor Park each Tuesday in July. The best part is, you can bring your own beer and wine to these concerts, so make sure to stop by Immortal and pick up a beverage before the concert.

Pietopia is August 5
No Portland Pie-Off this year, but if you’re looking for a pie contest, Pietopia, a unique writing/pie contest concludes at Buckman Farmer’s Market on August 5. According to organizer Tricia Martin:

The winners will bring their pies to the Buckman Farmer’s Market (20th and Salmon SE) August 5th, 2010 for some good old fashioned tasting (yes, that’s right, free pie tasting! yum!). Come and find out what the taste of your community is like! Plus check out the amazing silk-screens that will be specially designed for each winning pie, the 2010 edition pie plates done by an amazing local ceramicist, a raffle, and more!

But wait, there’s more!
I’m sure this isn’t a complete list of all the pie-related events and opportunities out there. I’ll keep my eyes and ears open; make sure to follow me on Twitter for updates @MakeMeSomePie
or “like me” on Facebook.

Also make sure to visit the many farmer’s markets in Portland and surrounding areas – it is highly likely that you’ll find pie and you’ll definitely find tasty ingredients for pie.
