Review: Banning’s Restaurant & Pie House – French Apple

I celebrated National Pie Day by making a trip to Banning’s Restaurant & Pie House, a 24-hour diner off of Highway 99 in Tigard. They’ve been in business over 30 years and offer 20 varieties of pies and cakes at any given time!

Needless to say, there are a lot of good pies to choose from. If you’ve got a picky pie person, this is a great place, there’s something for everyone.

I decided to go with the French Apple, again, going with theme of trying pies that I don’t normally pick to help expand my pie-horizons.

Pie Profile: French Apple Pie, Banning’s Restaurant & Pie House – Tigard, OR

Presentation: They absolutely filled the plate with pie & ice cream, only the edge of the plate was left untouched. Nice touch as well with the caramel neatly drizzled over the ice cream.

Crust: The outer crust was nice and crispy, but the bottom crust was slightly soggy. That may have been a result of me coming in around 10:30 at night.

Filling: The filling was very sweet, and really, this is expected in a French Apple pie, right? But combined with the caramel syrup on top of the pie and ice cream, it was slightly over the top. The apples also seemed to be in limbo between crisp and soft, which isn’t such a bad thing, but I wasn’t sure what to make of it.

Overall Score: Three out of five slices. I appreciate the large slice and nice presentation, but ultimately this pie was too sweet for me. I also noticed a few bites where the crumb topping was too hard, perhaps a result of over-caramelization. However, I’ll certainly give Banning’s the benefit of the doubt, especially since I’m not a regular consumer of the French Apple variety. Considering their wide variety of pies, I think I’ll be able to find one that better suits my taste.
