Bipartisan Cafe is a hip little place in Portland just off of Stark. It was so packed we had to take the pie in a to-go box, but I wasn’t complaining.
They had some traditional choices including Cherry and Strawberry Rhubarb, but I went with one that was a combo I had never thought of: peach marionberry.
Pie Profile: Peach Marionberry, Bipartisan Cafe – Portland, OR
Presentation: My judgment may have been corrupted by eating it out of the box, but overall, presentation was the only weak part of this pie (and seriously, presentation is the least important part to me). The piece I had was all by its lonesome when I got to it, too, so the slice wasn’t that clean and the filling was a little runny. But given the circumstances, the presentation wasn’t bad.
Crust: I would call this a lighter, slightly chewy crust. Given that, there wasn’t a lot of flakiness, but I enjoy this type of crust and they made it well. The outer crust was nice and crispy and no signs of burnt crust. Cooked to perfection!
Filling: I’m not typically a huge peach guy, but I couldn’t resist this combo and it did not disappoint! Marionberry is a perfect complement to the peach. They did a great job of keeping the marionberry to peach ratio in line. I think if there had been too much marionberry, it would have changed the dynamic of this pie, but they made sure that peach remained the focus of the pie and added just enough marionberry to change the taste.
Overall score: Four out of five slices. Love the melding of peach and marionberry. Crust was light and tasty. Only docking them a little for the presentation aspect, but overall, I was thoroughly impressed and can’t wait to try another interesting combo from the Bipartisan Cafe.
Other Notes: In the spirit of the café’s name, they have a lot of fun political art up in the dining area. They serve Stumptown Coffee, which you can’t go wrong with and it looks like they have an awesome sandwich menu as well – so check them out at 7901 SE Stark St., Portland, OR.
