Random Order Coffeehouse and Bakery in the Alberta area of Portland is one of the tried-and-true vets of the Portland pie-scene and, according to their website, they have the hardware to prove it. They’ve won several “best of” awards from the Oregonian and other Portland blogs.
They pride themselves in offering all local ingredients, including baking supplies from Bob’s Red Mill, dairy from Sunshine Dairy, and other ingredients from local farms.
It’s also one of my favorites so far because it is open late, has adult-beverages and exceptional coffee available and they feature both savory and sweet pies, so you can make a square-meal of it. My wife and I shared their Chipotle Pork pie and their Chocolate Cream pie the other night.
Pie Profile: Chipotle Pork, Random Order Coffehouse and Bakery, Portland, OR
Presentation: I guess this isn’t the most attractive meat pie I’ve ever seen, but it wasn’t sloppy either, it held together nicely. They are served by the slice, so you have to wait a little bit for them to reheat it… but it’s worth the wait.
Crust: If I could knock anything, it’s that there wasn’t more crust! Maybe my problem was that I was sharing. It’s a fairly substantial crust on the edges, but at the same time, it’s relatively light and airy and it’s quite flaky.
Filling: This pie featured a tender and delicious pork from Carlton Farms in Carlton, Oregon, plus cabbage and potatoes from local farms. What brings it all together is a spicy, but not-too-spicy Chipotle sauce. All the flavors worked together well. The crust was great, but the filling is what this pie was all about.
Overall Rating: I have to go 5 out of 5 here (I’m starting to think I’m not a very discerning savory pie-taster, but whatever, I’ve really enjoyed each one so far). Great pie with a unique, but very palatable filling. I’m not a big cabbage person usually (although I’ll eat a Reuben any day), but everything worked together really well.
Notes: If you like beer and pie, we washed it down with a nice Terminal Gravity IPA, which I would recommend with this pie.
