And now we venture into the world of frozen pies. I haven’t eaten a lot of pies from the frozen section in my life; they never really appealed to me, but there are a lot of options out there, so people must be eating them! I looked at the frozen pie section at Albertson’s the other day and it was surprisingly big!
Wholly Wholesome pies are sold at natural foods stores, such as Whole Foods. You can go to their website to see where they’re sold near you. Their pies are made with all natural, organic ingredients, whatever that means.
We had a family gathering, so two pies were prepared, blueberry and cherry. The presentation was fine, not overly pretty pies, but they looked pretty good in whole form. They didn’t slice well, but we also didn’t let them sit long enough, so no points deducted for that.
We probably should have left these pies to cool a little longer, but it was late, so we hurried it a little. But that meant that the crust may have needed a little more time to settle. As it stood, though, the top crust was a little weak. The edge was sufficiently crispy and flaky, though.
The filling was a mixed bag. I wasn’t a fan of the flavor with the blueberry. It seemed too spicy and aromatic, whereas I like the blueberries to speak for themselves more. The cherry filling, on the other hand was pretty good. It was a pretty generic cherry filling, but it wasn’t too runny, which is important to me.
Overall Rating: Hmm, this is a tough call, as this is my first frozen pie experience. I’m going to go with 2.5 out of 5 slices right now. I may revise that as I sample other pies. It was decent pie, but not terribly impressive. I wouldn’t seek these pies out, but if you put it in front of me, I wouldn’t complain, either.
