While I didn’t get a chance to try any of the “heavyweights” of Seattle pie when I went up for a day recently, I did “get my pie on” at Etta’s Seafood. Etta’s is one of many restaurants owned by Tom Douglas, a Seattle restaurateur. Among his holdings is Dahlia Bakery, which I hear is one of Seattle’s finest when it comes to pie – so, there may be some relation between Dahlia Bakery and Etta’s, although I don’t know that for a fact (don’t worry, I’ll make sure to try Dahlia Bakery at some point).
Presentation: A very nice looking fried pie (what fried pie doesn’t look good?). This is a more upscale restaurant, so the presentation was very nice. The pie was served with vanilla ice cream that had streusel mixed in with it.
Crust: A nice, light, crisp and flaky fried crust. My only knock on it was that it was a little thin. A little more crust would have been good, but it’s alright – better not enough crust than too much crust.
Filling: A very simple filling of finely chopped apple. Didn’t seem to have a whole lot added to it, very light seasoning and sugar, but it really worked nicely, especially since it was served with the streusel ice cream that really sweetened things up.
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 slices. I was a little concerned trying pie at a seafood restaurant (I dislike fish), but this was not a disappointment. I only give it four out of five slices because it wasn’t an extremely memorable pie… there wasn’t much wrong with it, but I wouldn’t go back JUST to get the pie. But, if you happen to be there, it’s good dessert.
Other Notes: If you’re visiting Seattle, check the visitor’s guides they have at hotels. We found a coupon for free dessert with an entree at Tom Douglas restaurants.
Check out Etta’s at 2020 Western Avenue, Seattle, WA.
