I was at Fred Meyer shopping for dinner and a pie caught my eye from afar. It’s rhubarb season, and strawberry rhubarb sounded excellent! So I bought a strawberry rhubarb pie and took it home to share with my wife and my folks, who we had over for dinner that night.
Somehow, after I had already sliced and served the pie, it still took me a bite or two to realize that we were eating a CHERRY Pie. I’m glad I realized it, because otherwise, I’d officially be the WORST pie-taster in the world.
Pie Lesson: when you buy a fruit pie from a grocery store, don’t be surprised if they were mis-labeled.
On to the pie review:
Presentation: Not a bad looking pie on the whole, but it did not slice very cleanly. It really kind of just collapsed when you cut into it.
Crust: It had a good level of thickness, crispness and flakiness. I also liked that they put a light sugar glaze on the top crust.
Filling: Well, aside from my disappointment that it wasn’t STRAWBERRY RHUBARB like I paid for, the cherry filling was pretty good. It was your standard cherry pie filling, but it wasn’t too runny and syrupy, which is nice. My wife, who doesn’t like a lot of filling, also commented on the fact that it had a good filling to crust ratio.
Overall Rating: 2.5 out of 5. It’s a grocery store bakery pie – so obviously I wasn’t blown away – but I was really pleasantly surprised by the decentness of this pie. For just over $4.50, it’s not a bad option for those “Oh crap, we need dessert and I have no time” moments.
