Oh, what’s a piet you ask? Well it’s only the latest dieting trend!
A “piet” is a little experiment I’m going to try, and it’s basically when you say “No thanks” to every dessert… except pie.
Will it work for me? I have no idea. I think it will help my situation, though. Due to an overabundance of candy at my job, I’ve been eating quite a bit of chocolate. I don’t typically keep desserts on hand at home, but when you throw in the occasional dessert when dining out or at a party, along with the pie I am required to eat for this blog – that’s too much.
So, I’m thinking, since pie reigns supreme over all other desserts, why waste my calories on inferior sweets? Say no to other sweets, say yes to pie. Simple as that.
Piet Rules:
1. No sweets but pie.
2. No more than 3 slices (of sweet pie) a week.
Exceptions:
1. A la mode rule: A scoop of ice cream is permitted with certain pies.
2. Allowance of one pastry a week from my favorite coffee shop, because I can’t make it through the week without one.
Am I crazy? Well, my “piet” concept isn’t completely unfounded. In fact, it’s actually a spin-off of a rule that Michael Pollan suggests in his book Food Rules.
In the book, he suggests simple rules like “Eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself.”
The point of that rule is that sweets and junk foods are difficult to prepare yourself (ex: do you want to make your own french fries all the time?). In other words, you’re creating a barrier to entry for junk food into your diet. So, what I’m trying to do is create a barrier for most sweets.
However, I’m also creating an opening for more pie in my life… so… we’ll see.
My thinking, however, is that pie isn’t readily available for my consumption on a regular basis – I will have to go out of my way to get it.
