Pine State Biscuits is one of my favorite breakfast spots in Portland and I’ve gone a lot more since they opened a second location on Alberta with more seating in addition to the original Belmont location. Along with their amazing breakfast sandwiches, they also offer pecan pie and chicken pot pie (at the Alberta location).

Let’s start with the good, and that was the pecan pie. This is just a good solid take on traditional pecan pie. It was balanced, with a good amount of pecans and the right amount of sugary goo. The crust didn’t sway me one way or the other, it just did it’s job with little fanfare. It was served with just about the right size whip cream mountain as well.

However, I’ll be honest, if you’re going to go with a dessert there – go with their seasonal strawberry shortcake when they have it. They specialize in biscuits, so it’s naturally going to be amazing.

Now on to the bad. We also tried the chicken pot pie, which I believe is only on the menu at the Alberta location. First off, it’s not really pie, it’s a mixture of chicken, veggies and gravy with a biscuit topping. I knew that going in, so I’m not complaining about it – just letting you know.

The chicken pot pie just did not have a lot of flavor… I think they used their mushroom gravy instead of the sausage gravy, which seemed really bland in comparison and I didn’t think there was enough of their delicious fried chicken either. It also took a long time for them to prepare – which added to the disappointment after you’d been anticipating some serious chicken pot pie goodness.

Verdict: The pecan pie is fine if you’re in the mood for it. I don’t recommend the chicken pot pie; stick with the Reggie and the other excellent sandwiches.

Paul McCartney <del datetime="2011-07-07T16:57:59+00:00">recently </del>blocked a proposed parody of his song “Live and Let Die” by Sir Weird Al Yankovic. Yankovic’s proposed parody was entitled “Chicken Pot Pie”. I can envision the song, and it is beautiful, so I feel that Sir Paul is doing the world, and pie, a huge disservice.

Given that McCartney and The Beatles have an intrinsic connection with pie, I found this a little surprising. But, McCartney is a strict vegetarian, so he apparently is not down with his song being linked to a pie made out of chicken.

Yankovic says he respects McCartney’s decision:

“He didn’t want a song used in any context that would be supposedly promoting the consumption of animal flesh… It’s a valid reason and I get it. And I hate it when people put him on the list of humourless guys, because that wasn’t the case at all. In fact, he said, ‘Think of any other subject and I’m happy to OK it’.”

Perhaps Weird Al could rename the song “Vegan Pot Pie”? Hmm… doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.

Update: Apparently this is old news, as Weird Al has actually performed this song in the 90s, according to a commenter. In fact, a little more research reveals that some Weird Al fans have taken it upon themselves to bring the song to the world – see exhibit A below!

My lovely wife seems to have taken a shine to pie-making, and I must say, I couldn’t be more pleased. I guess she got the message of my website (Make Me Some Pie!).

Above is a picture of a chicken pot pie she made recently.

We’ve settled on a pretty simple butter crust recipe that is delicious and the edge of the crust is so crisp and buttery it honestly reminds me of a Ritz cracker. This is the pie crust recipe we like: Mom’s Pie Crust (via allrecipes.com)

Making the filling for a pot pie, or any meat pie for that matter, really seems pretty easy. Just make a mixture of meat and veggies that you like and that tastes good & put it in the pie… simple enough!

In this case, she chopped and sautéed some carrots, potatoes, garlic, onion and peas together with some chicken broth. She cooked the chicken separately and then mixed it in with the veggies when it was done.

Then fill your pie, cover it with your top crust and I believe we bake at 425 for 25 minutes and then lower it to 375 for another 25-30 minutes.

Making pot pie rocks as well because it is a good leftover food for work, or for dinner the next day (preferably, as it’s better reheated in the oven).
