The American Pie Council has designated January 23, 2011 as National Pie Day (not to be confused with March 14, which has been designated as Pi Day by nerds worldwide), so it’s time to CELEBRATE pie and eat pie like it’s 1899!

For Pie Day 2011 in Portland, I’ve prepared a “Portland Pie Crawl” map for you to help guide you on your quest for delicious pie in Pie Town, and keep reading below for special pie day deals and events from Portland area pie purveyors.

Portland

Bakers & Spice – Baker & Spice in Hillsdale will be celebrating pie day and their sixth birthday beginning on Saturday, January 22. “We will have balloons and coloring for the kids, drawings, pie tasting competition (at SweetWares) pie slices of all kinds, boston cream pie, hand pies, cream pies, samples and will be donating a percentage of our pie day menu sales to our friends at Neighborhood House.” Expert pie bakers Laura Ohm (Grand Central Bakery) and Baker & Spice’s Kathy High are offering demos for $10 on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. – call 503-546-3737 to reserve a spot – 100% of the proceeds benefit Neighborhood House.

Pie Spot - Pie Spot will offer a $1 off National Pie Day special at their cart located in the D Street Noshery at 3221 SE Division. The discount will be on both savory and sweet pies.

Immortal Pie & Larder – Immortal Pie & Larder on Stark will be offering a buy two get one free special on their 4″ savory and sweet pies.

Pacific Pie Co. – Pacific Pie Co. is cooking up WHOLE sweet pies, which they don’t usually do, and in flavors they don’t always offer including: Banana Cream, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Summer Berry, Chocolate Bourbon Hazelnut, Pear Hazelnut Crumb and Old Fashioned Apple. These flavors will be available on Saturday, January 22 for $4 a slice. You can also pre-order a whole pie for $25 for pick up on Saturday (order by Thursday, Jan. 20 at 5 p.m.)

Random Order – Random Order is offering $1 off all slices on January 23.

Le Cordon Bleu – Le Cordon Bleu in Portland is hosting a “Pie Making Extravaganza” on Saturday, January 22. Their instructors will be demonstrating different pie recipes and offering pie-making tips. They’ll also offer tours of the facilities… because I’m sure they wouldn’t mind recruiting a few more chefs-in-training. The culinary school is also holding similar events at their locations throughout the country.

Shari’s Restaurants – Shari’s locations throughout the Northwest are offering a free slice of pie with the purchase of a lunch or dinner entree. Here’s a link to the coupon.

Nehalem, Oregon

- On January 22, Kim Miller will host a “Secrets to Making a Great Pie” class and the following day they will auction off pies at the Pie Day Auction and Feast to support Lower Nehalem Community Trust and Food Roots. For more information, read the Tillamook Headlight Herald article.

Seattle, Washington

National

Marie Callender’s – Marie Callender’s has specials on a $9.99 pie meal deal that includes a chicken pot pie or shepherd’s pie and a slice of a sweet pie of your choice. They also have a special on Lemon Meringue pie for $7.99.

Village Inn – Village Inn is offering a free slice with the purchase of an “adult” entree. You need this coupon.

Immortal Pie & Larder is basically a take n’ bake pie shop (or, take & reheat). Along with tasty pies, they have wine, beer and other tasty food goods available.

They don’t offer very many “traditional” savory pies, per se, but all the pies on their menu sound interesting and tasty. I’m just saying, don’t go expecting a traditional chicken pot pie or anything.

I chose the andouille sausage and sweet potato pie, as I knew these were two ingredients I would enjoy.

And ENJOY I did.

I love how they’re sold in little bake-able cardboard pie tins (ala Papa Murphy’s) and come with reheat instructions. The pie itself is visually appealing and has kind of a… rustic, old-timey pie feel to it.

The crust was solid & had a nice level of flakiness.

The filling was delicious. The andouille was very good – spicy as it should be – and it worked very nicely with the sweet potato. My only knock on the filling is that the pie wasn’t jam-packed with filling.

Overall, I give this pie a solid 4 out of 5 slice rating with my only knock being don’t skimp on the filling.
